ERIC W. SANDERSON is the Associate Director for Landscape Ecology and Geographic Analysis in the Living Landscape Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo.  He is an expert in the application of geographic principles and techniques to problems in wildlife, landscape, and ecological conservation, and has published numerous articles on the subject.  He lives in New York City.

HUDSON VALLEY QUINTET
COMMISSIONED BY:  Quintet of the Americas

This artistic presentation combining
Live Performance, Sound Design, Film and Speech.

MUSIC BY CHRISTOPHER KAUFMAN
VIDEO BY KEN CRO-KEN

Commissioned by: QUINTET OF THE AMERICAS

In this season of music, for which HUDSON VALLEY QUINTET serves as 'flagship', the Quintet of the Americas is Celebrating their 30th Anniversary. The concept for the season, i.e. environmental issues, is conceived in concert with the Wildlife Conservations Society's 'Mannahatta Project' - which concerns history and sustainability of the Hudson River Valley environment.

After hearing Christopher Kaufamn's earlier piece of this type, MUSIC FROM EARTH (refer to his home page), Barbara Oldham (of Quintet of the Americas) decided his present concert music style and the goals of the Quintet were a perfect match.

This work will feature the Live performance of the Quintet  of the Americas.

Films of Visual Images will also be a part of the performance.

................................

HUDSON RIVER QUINTET will tell a story - beginning at the mouth of the river and then moving to the shore and then up the river through forested areas. There is a 'transition to darkness', 'Industrial Storm' and '...and the Earth is our Spiritual House'. The work ends with a sense of unresolved hopefulness.

...................................................................... ...

.This picture is the result of extracting Natural Gas from the environment - this is happening now.

Manipulating space, time and matter.

in my case the matter is paint.

As a result, I learn about paint and nature simultaneously.

A new booklet:

"THE CONDUCT OF PAINT"

The Big Bang Theory in 21st Century Painting

There came a time within my creative experiences when art books no longer answered the questions I had.

By exchanging the word nature for the word paint, I was able to create the "art books" I sought.

Over the last couple of decades Emerson's writing have been more influential to me than any art book.

Not quoting him would have been a missed opportunity;

because so much of what he said 150 years ago needs to be repeated and reinforced in other words and visions.

Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's book,

"The Conduct of Life", written in 1860
